A practical ELD readiness check.

Use this temporary checklist to review your preparation. It does not certify readiness or store a compliance record.

Follow the official’s request.

Make the relevant history accessible.

Be prepared to provide the current 24-hour period and previous seven consecutive days of duty-status records.

Use the supported transfer workflow.

Follow the ELD instructions and the authorized safety official’s directions. A failed transfer is not a reason to abandon the inspection process.

Keep the scope clear.

A roadside inspection may cover more than logs. This guide addresses ELD preparation, not every document or vehicle item an official may examine.

Know the fallback procedure.

Notify the carrier of an ELD malfunction in writing or electronically within 24 hours. Reconstruct the current day and previous seven days on compliant paper logs unless those records are already available or retrievable.

Continue manual records when required until the device is compliant. Carriers generally have eight days from discovery or driver notification, whichever is earlier, to correct the malfunction; an extension requires the applicable FMCSA process.
